1950s: Abdul Karim Khan Sher Khan alias Karim Lala sets up gambling and bootlegging dens. He also masters the art of settling disputes.
1960s: Emergence of a noteworthy gang in Mumbai with Vardarajan Mudaliyar alias Vardhabhai, a migrant Tamil, as the leader. He spreads his umbrella over smaller gangs in illicit liquor trade. Haji Mastan and Yusuf Patel are other names to reckon with, they are into smuggling of contraband and construction activity.
1974: Dawood Ibrahim is arrested for the first time in a smuggling case. Chhota Rajan enters the world of crime by selling cinema tickets in black.
1981-84: Shabir, Dawood's elder brother, murdered by Pathan gang. This leads to a bloody war in which the killers are hunted down. Dawood aide Bada Rajan is shot dead. Dawood flees to Dubai. His brothers Anees and Noora look after operations from Temkar Mohalla in Nagpada.
1987-1990: Almost all rivals of Dawood are eliminated. The only challenger is Arun Gawli. Dawood's close aides including Chhota Shakeel flee to Dubai.
1993-94: Dawood triggers serial bomb blasts in Mumbai. Chhota Rajan parts ways accusing Dawood of being communal. Dawood shifts base to Karachi. Chhota Rajan flees India.
1995-1997: Dawood's plan to eliminate Rajan fails. Chhota Rajan retaliates by killing Sunil Sawant alias Savtya at a hotel in Dubai.
1997: Gulshan Kumar murdered. Abu Salem behind the murder.
1998: Salem parts ways with Dawood following fight with Shakeel, moves to Africa.
2000: Near-fatal attack on Chhota Rajan in Bangkok, Rohit Verma is killed.
2003: Rajan masterminds killing of Sharad Shetty, dealing a severe blow to Dawood. Dubai Police detain several Dawood associates. His younger brother Iqbal and bomb blast accused Ejaz Pathan are deported to Mumbai.
